Country Day Thespians Honored at Florida Thespian State Conference

by Ms. Cristina Pla-Guzman
The Florida State Conference in the largest gathering of high school theatre students in the world. The conference was held in Tampa where over 10,000 students gathered to represent their schools. Our students had the incredible opportunity to attend countless workshops (such as How to Belt, Auditioning Skills for College Auditions, Choreography for Newsies the Musical, Acting Workshops to name a few) with professionals and plenty other amazing experiences. The State conference is an amazing way to continue to grow our theatre program at MCDS by exposing our students to professional casting directors, choreographers, and actors while attending Main Stage productions and learning as a troupe as well as individuals.

To our delight, we did better than last year! We received 1 Top Honors (Best in the STATE!) 5 Superiors (equivalent to first place) and 1 Excellent (equivalent to second place) at State. It is only the second time for our upper school troupe to attend State all together as a troupe and I am so incredibly proud of their accomplishments. Yet, we have even more wonderful news. In addition to our individual events, our 3 Juniors scholarship nominees all were awarded Superiors for their professionalism, preparedness and talent. They received 14 offers as automatic acceptances into school, precollege programs, or as substitutions to their college auditions. They not only auditioned for those programs but were able to conduct interviews and speak to individual schools. The students have done all the preparations to attend State while preparing for 4 other performances throughout the year: RENT, the Yule Log Celebration, Evening of Theatre, and now GREASE.

We are so incredibly proud of ALL the Thespians! Please join me in celebrating their incredible efforts! The drama kids left State so excited they were already preparing their pieces for next year. They are incredibly motivated for GREASE which is a little more than a month away on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The passion for the arts is burning bright at Miami Country Day School!

Way to Go Miami Country Day Thespians!!
